Hachman & Hulle was a New York City bottler that operated under that name from approximately 1862 to 1875. The roots of the business date back to a German named John H. Hachman (sometimes Hachmann) who was first listed in the 1862/1863 New York City directory with the occupation “soda water,” and an address of 163 Perry Street in what is now called Manhattan’s “West Village.”
Within a year Hachman had partnered with Henry Hulle and the business of Hachman & Hulle was initially listed at the 163 Perry Street address. A year later, Hachman & Hulle moved around the corner to 423 West Street.
In 1866/1867 John H. Hulle replaced Henry Hulle as Hachman’s partner and the business continued to operate under the Hachman & Hulle name until 1875 when the partnership was dissolved. The dissolution was announced in the March, 1876 edition of the New York City Copartnership and Corporation Directory.
By this time, Hachman had moved the business to 48 Horatio Street where he continued to operate it under his name until 1884 when he moved again, this time to the east side of Manhattan at 334 East 31st Street. The business was listed there as late as 1898/1899.
Census records in 1900 list Hachman’s wife, Wilhelmina, as a widow, suggesting that he passed away sometime in 1898 or 1899. As far as I can tell this signaled the end of the business.
The bottle I found is a mouth blown pony with a blob finish. It exhibits the 423 West Street address dating it between 1864 and 1875.
